Lacrosse Opens Season Against Mandeville
This past Saturday, the Bears opened their regular season when they squared off against the Mandeville Skippers, before a large crowd at BRECí´s Olympia Stadium.
The day started with the JV squad taking to the field. The Bears started off quickly, with Taylor Fontenot scoring the first goal only 32 seconds into the game. They kept the pace up in route to a 12-0 shut-out victory, behind goalie Beau Abadie and a stout defense that only allowed one shot on goal. Brennan Pizzolato led the day for the defense with 2 ground balls, 1 take away and every defenders dream, a goal.
On the offensive side of the ball, the scoring was spread out between 8 players, with Taylor Fontenot and Clayton Rives leading the way with 2 goals each. Christopher Miller was the helper of the day with 3 assist.
After the JV game, the varsity took the field starting their quest to repeat as district champs. While the day started out brightly for the Bears, it ended with a hard fought double OT 11-10 loss to the Skippers. Offensively the Bears were lead by Andrew Young and Tres Hawkins, who each had hat tricks, scoring 3 goals. Defensively, the Bears were led by Zach Minton with 19 saves and Landon Tujague with 5 ground balls. At the end of the day, the mental errors took their toll on the Bears as they gave up the lead late in the game and could not get it back before the clock read zero with the game tied 10-10. The defenses for both teams controlled the first OT and after four minutes, the game remained 10-10. In the second OT, mental errors again caught the Bears, as they were penalized and put in a man down situation. The Skippersí´ offense used this opportunity to spread the defense out and score the winning goal with one second left on the clock. With the loss, the Bears are 0-1 with a long schedule ahead of them.
The varsity returns to the field Wednesday night against Dutchtown at Olympia Stadium with a 6:30 start. The JVB will play Thursday night against Central at Wildcat Stadium with a 6:30 start.
Next weekend all three Bear Squads travel to Houston for games against Clearlake, Friendswood, Pearland and St. Thomas.
