Rev. Kenneth A. Smith Memorial Endowment Scholarship Established

The Reverend Kenneth A. Smith Jr. Memorial Endowment Scholarship has been established by family and close friends to honor one of Catholic High’s most beloved supporters. His love for CHS was unquestioned and his devotion in particular to its athletic teams was well known by all.

Fr. Smith was ordained at St. Joseph Cathedral by the late Most Reverend Robert E. Tracy in May of 1963. His priestly ministry took him to assignments at St. Agnes, the Catholic Deaf Center, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Maringouin, the Baton Rouge General Medical Center, St. Anthony of Padua, Sacred Heart of Jesus, and finally as the administrator of St. Anne in Sorrento and St. Anthony in Darrow. He also served as chaplain of the Baton Rouge City Police Department from 1977-1987, and was a member of KC Council 3298 and the Baton Rouge Sertoma Club.

Although he was a fixture at many Catholic High functions, Fr. Smith spent time with family and friends on the night before his passing by attending the CHS Alumni Taste Fair. Those who visited with him at the Taste Fair will have the memory of knowing how much he enjoyed himself by sharing great food and fellowship with his Catholic High family.

Anyone interested in contributing to help fully fund this scholarship, or wishing to honor a loved one by establishing an endowed fund or scholarship, may contact CHS Director of Development, Hal Dupuy ’73, at 389-0978 or hdupuy@catholichigh.org.
