Second Half Spark Lifts Bears Over East Ascension
The Bears saw East Ascension close to within two points in the fourth quarter on two occasions, but pulled away late to hold off the Spartans’ rally and win 37-21. The Bears led East Ascension 10-7 at half. The district opening win puts the Bears’ record at 6-0 overall and 1-0 in district, while EA drops to 0-5.
CHS entered the EA game ranked #2 (John Curtis is #1) in Class 5A in the LSWA poll, #1 in the 5A poll at Sportsnola.com, and sits third in the Division I power ratings behind John Curtis and Scotlandville.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK FOR THE EA GAME
DEFENSE: Sophomore safety Jonathan Mestayer – 8 solo tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, an interception and a pass breakup.
OFFENSE: Senior RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire scored 3 touchdowns in his return from injury and rushed for 123 yards on just 10 carries.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Senior deep snapper Aaron Moffitt was accurate and swift on his snaps on field goal, extra point, and punt teams.
The Bears will visit district foe Broadmoor on the road this Friday, October 14. The Buccaneers, under second year head coach Elliott Wilkins, are 2-4 and have an upset victory over 5-1 Belaire to their credit. Broadmoor is led by quarterback Zachary Johnson, running back Jordan Bailey and receiver Amari Coleman. The Bucs were defeated last week by Dutchtown, 38-0.
