Senior Daniel Ourso Wins Third At State CYLA Scholarship Competition
CHS senior Daniel Ourso competed as the Diocese of Baton Rouge boy finalist in the state Catholic Youth Leadership Award (CYLA) scholarship program on Sunday, April 9. Ourso finished third in state and received a $2,000 scholarship form the Louisiana Knights of Columbus. Also representing the Diocese of Baton Rouge as the girl finalist was Camryn Brouillette from St. JosephÕs Academy.
The CYLA scholarship has been awarded annually by the Knights of Columbus since 1959. The program recognizes young Catholic men and women who are faithful role models to others in their schools, churches or community. By participating in the program, candidates are offered an opportunity to be recognized as one of the best Catholic students in their respective schools. The recognition encourages these outstanding students to hold true to their Catholic values and accept the varied leadership roles they will be asked to fill in the future.
In February, seven Catholic High seniors were selected by their respective Knights of Columbus Councils as semifinalists to advance in CYLA. Those seniors were Hayden Denham (Council 4030), William Martin (Council 3743), Daniel Ourso (Council 10455, selected finalist), Lance Rodriguez II (Council 9692), Michael Ross (Council 5530), Jeremy Sapia (Council 2657) and Andrew Schoonmaker (Council 9247).
