Soccer Bears Outscore Walker 4-1 In District Match

The Catholic High soccer team entered Tuesday night’s District 3 match with a 4-6-4 record against a 13-win Walker squad.  Pundits thought that CHS would struggle based on the win-loss record, but the Bears put those opinions to rest as they outscored Walker 4-1 on the Wildcats’ home pitch.

Walker entered halftime with a 1-0 lead, but the Bears answered with a four goal, second half onslaught, running its record to 2-0 in District 3 play. CHS registered 13 shots on goal, scoring four times, while Walker mustered just three shots on goal and were stymied by excellent backline play by the Bears.

Cole Cazenave scored two goals to add to his team lead total of six on the season. Ben Bishop tacked in a goal and Max Trapp tallied his fourth netter of the year.

“I was proud of our guys for responding the way they did after halftime,” said second year head coach for the Bears, Josh McReynolds. “We were down 1-0 but the guys were confident. We had a tremendous effort from our defense and our offense was able to put a ton of pressure on them (27 shots with 13 on goal), which resulted in our scores.  We converted an early opportunity off a rebound to tie it, then our momentum took over.  Our bench helped give us a spark in the second half to seal the game. We entered the season with a young team and it is encouraging to see the guys’ growth as the season has progressed. Our power rating should increase after the victory over 13 win Walker.”

The Bears take their 2-0 record into another District 3 match on Friday, Jan. 20, versus Zachary at Catholic High.  Opening touch is at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity game to follow.  Zachary is 7-9-1 and 1-2 in DIstrict 3 play.  A win over the Broncos could put the Bears in the top 10 in the power ratings.
