Soccer Team Advances to Second Round of Playoffs
The CHS Soccer team advanced to the second round of the Division I playoffs with their 3-0 win over visiting Pineville last week.
The win sends the Bears on the road to face area rival number five seed St. Amant at The Pit. The Gators are 16-2-1 overall and are a stout 10-0-1 at The Pit in eleven matches this season. St. Amant won their first district title in boys soccer since 2002.
Head coach Josh McReynolds has directed the number 12 seed Bears to a 13-7-2 mark and a district championship in his first year at the helm. CHS is led by leading goal scorer Cole Cazenave and seniors Michael Focht and Matthew Morales. Patrick Riley is the goalkeeper for the Bears.
“One of the main keys to winning the match is to be organized and disciplined on set pieces. St. Amant is known for their exceptional set piece execution. We will need to have top notch concentration and discipline to deal with the Gators’ set pieces,” said McReynolds. “We must neutralize one of the best players in the state in junior Briggs Bourgeois. Bourgeois is an all-state kicker in football and all-district baseball outfielder for St. Amant. He is the heart and soul of their team and the school’s best athlete. If we limit his touches and mark him physically, this increases our chances of winning the match.
“Finally, we must convert our attacking opportunities. St. Amant is known for being stingy defensively at home. The Pit is a smaller field, which the Gators use to their advantage. Our opponent is 17-2-2 at home the last two seasons. We must take advantage of all corner and penalty kick opportunities to put pressure on our opponent.”
The Pit is located at St. Amant Primary School at 44326 Highway 429 in St.Amant. Game time is for 7 p.m. The winner advances to the quarterfinals and will face the winner of number 13 Sulphur and number four Jesuit.
