Spencer Heitman Selected For Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council
Congratulations to CHS senior Spencer Heitman for being selected to serve on the 2018-2019 Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC). Now in its 11th year, LYAC facilitates communication between youth and the legislature, and gives students the unique opportunity to be involved in the workings of state government. LYAC members have the opportunity to study, meet with elected officials and propose legislation in the upcoming regular session.
Members of the council are selected from a large pool of applicants from around the state who display a strong interest in civic involvement. These students are dynamic, well-rounded individuals that go through a rigorous selection process. Three student members serve from each of the congressional districts and the remainder of the 31 members serve at large. The members must be in grades nine through 12 and enrolled in a public or private high school or participating in a home study program.
Spencer is president of the Youth & Government Club, through which he has attended the National Judicial Competition and will attend the Conference on National Affairs. The club has also afforded him opportunities to attend Youth Legislature and Model United Nations conferences. He is currently pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout and is active in Student Council, Drama Club and Art Club. He is also a member of the Varsity Track and Field team. Along with his extensive list of extracurricular activities, Spencer is a devoted student who received the honor of AP Scholar as a sophomore. He plans to pursue a college degree in International Relations and then go to law school. Spencer hopes that through fruitful dialogue with legislators, he can improve Louisiana for the youth and be an asset to the Legislative Youth Advisory Council.
