The Catholic basketball team continues District 5-5A hoops action
The Catholic basketball team continues District 5-5A hoops action on the road tonight at McKinley High School. Varsity tipoff is scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. The Bears enter tonight’s contest with a 22-5 record, while the Panthers come in at 13-14. CHS is ranked fifth in the latest Division I power ratings.
The Bears are led by Kentrell Garnett, who is averaging 20 points per game and is shooting 50 percent from the three-point line. Six year coach Mark Cascio has been getting serious help from his bench all season with key reserve play from Chandler Rowe, Caleb Warner and Ian Cavana. Cavana scored 18 points off the bench in the Bears’ recent 81-59 victory of district rival St. Amant. “Ian’s work from off the bench against the Gators typifies our unselfishness as a team,” noted Cascio. “Chandler and Caleb have been a huge part of our team’s stretch and have given us quality minutes all season. In our six years here, it is our best team depth and team concept,” added Cascio.
The Bears will face a tough crowd tonight at McKinley and need to establish the pace of the game early. Cascio’s team welcomes the challenge of facing three 6’3 inside players from McKinley. “McKinley wants to get the ball inside to their big men and counter that with a zone defense,” commented Cascio.
As the Bears head down the stretch, they will face East Ascension this Friday at home in the annual “Silent Night” game, followed by games against Dutchtown and Broadmoor for Senior Night. “We are playing well down the stretch, having won seven in a row and 11 of our last 12. We must continue to build on this momentum as we drive toward the playoffs,” said Cascio.
