The quest for a Division I basketball title begins tonight as the CHS basketball team takes on the Evangel Christian Eagles at 6 p.m. in the Bear Cave on the CHS campus.
The Eagles come into the game as the No. 12 seed in the 12 team Division I pairings. Evangel finished the regular season with a 3-17 overall record and a 2-10 district record. The Eagles sport district wins over Haughton and 13-13 Parkway.
CHS Head Coach Mark Cascio assessed the Bears’ Regional round game. “Evangel is athletic, but doesn’t have a lot of size. They will switch between man and zone to try and keep us off balance,” said Cascio.
The Bears enter the post-season with a sparkling 26-5 record overall and captured the District 5-5A title with an unblemished record. CHS comes into tonight’s playoff opener on an 11 game win streak and has won 16 of its last 17 games. Signature wins down the stretch have come against Dutchtown, East Ascension and Riverside Academy.
“We feel really good about our team heading into the post-season,” commented Cascio. “Our guys have had a business-like approach in the second half of the season. The staff is looking forward to seeing our guys compete tonight.”
The winner of tonight’s contest will move on to the Division I quarterfinals against Jesuit of the famed Catholic League. The game will likely be held on Friday in New Orleans at the Jesuit gym.
