Thirteen CHS Students Recognized by National Merit

Nine Catholic High seniors have been named National Merit Semifinalists and four have received National Merit Commended honors in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. Roughly 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools across the nation entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The top 50,000 scorers qualify for the scholarship program.

Of those 50,000 students, the top one-third qualifies as National Merit Semifinalist. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. CHS seniors qualifying as a Semifinalist are Matthew Berdon, Andrew Ford, Michael Krzystowczyk, Jordan LeBas, Brian Long, Dominic Maggio, Harold Miller, Nicholas Mueller and Andrew Schoonmaker.

Matthew Berdon is the son of Martin and Deneen Berdon, and attended Most Blessed Sacrament School. Andrew Ford is the son of Milam and Lisa Ford, and attended St. Jude the Apostle. The remaining two-thirds of the top 50,000 high-scoring students in the nation qualify for National Merit Commended honors. The four CHS seniors to receive National Merit Commended honors are Christopher Alumbaugh, Lance Chaisson, Colin Hebert and William Martin.
