Varsity and JV Baseball Teams Improve Records with Tournament Wins
The varsity baseball team swept 4 games in the Atchafalaya Challenge Tournament this past weekend. The Bears are now 16-2 and currently ranked 2nd in the state.
The Bears defeated Comeaux 10-1 on Thursday while hitting 3 homeruns(Chris Sciambra, Alex Guitreau, and Matt Dubreuil) and 4 doubles. Aaron Nola picked up his 4th win on the mound going 4 innings, 0 hits, and 6 strikeouts. The team then defeated 6th ranked Acadiana 4-2 on Friday. Alex Massey pitched a complete game allowing only 3 singles while striking out 7 to bring his record to 3-0 on the season. The Bears were led by Chris Sciambra (3-4 with 2 doubles), Alex Guitreau (2-4 with a double), and Greg Bellelo (2-3).
The Bears defeated Carencro 12-2 on Saturday. Jacob Knox picked up his 3rd win of the season allowing only 2 hits and striking out 8 vs Carencro. Offensively, the Bears were led by Chris Sciambra (2-4 with 2 RBIs), Karson Cullins (2-2 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored), and Colin Mancuso (2-2 with 2 runs scored).
In their last game in the tournament, the team faced the 5th ranked Lafayette Lions. After going down 2-0 in the 2nd inning, the Bears responded with 6 runs in the top of the 3rd inning with homeruns from Chris Sciambra, Alex Facundus and Aaron Nola. Lafayette responded with two runs in the bottom of the 3rd cutting the lead to 6-4. A four run 5th inning led by Chris Sciambra’s 2nd homerun of the game put the game out of reach as the Bears extended the lead to 10-5. With back to back homeruns in the 7th inning by Alex Guitreau and Alex Facundus, the Bears went on to pick up five more runs in the 7th inning and defeated the Lions 16-5. Dylan Gregoire was the winning pitcher bringing his record to 4-1.
The JV Baseball Team also went 4-0 this weekend. The JV Bears defeated East Ascension 8-7, Covington 19-1, U-High 6-1 and St. Michael’s 10-7. The JV team is now 10-1 on the season.
