Vietnam Veteran Ben Reed Speaks to CHS History Classes
Ben Reed, a Vietnam veteran, visited the American History classes of Mr. Jared Cavalier and Mr. Andy Martin at Catholic High on April 21. Reed spoke of his experiences in Vietnam while serving with the Kilo Company 3rd Batallion 9th Marine Regiment 3rd Marine Division from 1969-1970 near Khe Sanh in the Quang Tri Province.
Reed, an award winning journalist and assistant state editor for The Advocate, has written a fictional novel, My Dying Breath, based on his experiences in Vietnam. The novel tells the story of three Louisiana men who leave home to fight in a war in Vietnam. He is currently working on his second novel titled Captured Hearts.
After being wounded in June 1969 while on Operation Utah Mesa near Khe Sanh in the Da Krong Valley in Quang Tri Province, Reed returned home in 1970 and graduated from the LSU School of Journalism in 1973. He has since earned more than 30 writing and editing awards from the Louisiana Press Association.
