Wrestling Coach Tommy Prochaska Gets 300th Victory
The number 300 has been a milestone figure in sports. In major league baseball, 300 wins by a pitcher guarantees a berth in the Hall of Fame. In college football, only three coaches have won 300 games at the highest level. In bowling, a 300 means you are perfect.
The Catholic High community already experienced a 300 milestone earlier this year when twenty-nine year football coach, Dale Weiner, achieved the feat on the football field. Weiner now gains company on campus as longtime wrestling coach and Class of 1992 alumnus, Tommy Prochaska, picked up win number 300 on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at the Baton Rouge River Center. With his team’s 49-27 victory over Teurlings Catholic at the Deep South Bayou Duals, Prochaska earned the milestone achievement.
It is a special accomplishment for Prochaska, as all 300 dual matches have been won as the head coach at Catholic. Prochaska was a four year letterman on the mat for the Bears and has been the head coach for the last eighteen years. In a day and age where coaches jump around looking for the next job, Prochaska is a rarity. His loyalty and dedication to Catholic High, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, his staff, his wrestlers and his family is a testament to who he is and why he has remained in his role for almost two decades. It is why Prochaska leads one of the best wrestling programs in the state and the south.
There was no Gatorade bath or long ceremony to celebrate win number 300. What did Prochaska do then to enjoy the moment? The humble coach watched his grapplers defeat Cypress Bay to win Bracket A in the Bayou Duals and collect win number 301 for their coach. No fanfare, the Bears just moved on, competed in the next match, and continued to work to improve as a team. Just as the newest member of the Catholic High 300 club would like it.
Congratulations Coach Prochaska!
