The Bears Don’t Flinch as the Cougars Took a Quick Lead

St. Thomas More (STM) appeared to have the Bears’ number in the early going of last Friday night’s contest, as the Cougars darted out to a 29-7 first quarter lead.  STM piled up several explosive plays that delighted the large home crowd. But, like a true heavyweight fighter, the Bears did not flinch, withstanding the early charge by the home team. Catholic mounted a comeback in the second quarter, holding STM to a three-and-out stop before half, to quiet the crowd and steal the Cougars’ momentum.

The Bears went into halftime down 36-31, before unleashing a barrage of its own in the second half and coming out on top, 52-43. The defense made several stops in the second half and forced three Cougar turnovers. Jonathan Mestayer and Landon Richard each had an interception to lead the Bears’ defense. Cameron Dartez threw for 276 yards and three touchdowns, while Josh Parker ran for four scores and amassed 193 yards on the ground. Matthew Goodson kicked a field goal and Michael Grizzaffi’s 52-yard punt return in the final quarter was the final blow.

Catholic will travel to Lafayette again on Friday, Sept. 28, to face Teurlings Catholic. The Rebels have won 39 games in the last five seasons and have made numerous trips to the Division II quarterfinals. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Rebel Stadium on Teurlings’ campus.
