The Catholic High lacrosse team, after a pair of weekend victories, is 5-0 for the first time in the program’s history.

The Bears won an emotional 12-9 contest against Airline High School Friday evening, before running away from Ocean Springs (Miss.) High on Saturday, 18-4. During the five-game streak, including a pair of district victories, Catholic has out-scored its opposition 63-26.

Leading the weekend offensive assault were sophomore midfielder Mitchell Gillem (7 goals, 3 assists) and senior attackman Caleb Barber (6 goals, 2 assists, 12 ground balls). Catholic also got strong offensive production from midfielder Reed Fontenot (4 goals) and attack players Topher Rives (4 goals, 3 assists) and Holden Farmer (3 goals, 6 assists). Worth noting: Greyson Saunders tallied his first career varsity goals, netting three in the win over Ocean Springs.

Pacing the defense was the outstanding effort of senior defensive midfielder Nick Saurage, who not only registered 12 ground balls but was a constant force in the clearing game. Both Saurage and junior long-stick midfielder Tucker Poret each picked up an assist over the weekend. The defensive unit teamed to limit Ocean Springs to just 9 shots in 48 minutes.

Also remaining undefeated was the junior varsity squad, which on Saturday cruised past the Ocean Springs JV team.

Both squads will put their undefeated records on the line this Saturday, traveling to Brother Martin. The freshman team will open its season as well, facing the Crusaders.
