Track And Field Bears Well Represented On All-State Team

The outdoor track & field season ended over a month ago in May with another Class 5A state championship at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium. But, the awards keep rolling in for the Bears as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association released its All-State Track and Field Team recently. A total of eight individual event athletes and two relay teams garnered All-State honors from the LSWA.

The Bears had three athletes named All-State in two events: Sethan Hollier received honors in both the 100 and 200 meter events and has two seasons of eligibility remaining at Catholic. Nigel Despinasse was named to the team in both the shot put and discus. Despinasse, who will compete for Brown University in both events in 2017, had the top throw in the state this season with a 57-7 effort. Jace Attuso, named All-State in the long jump and triple jump, had the state’s best mark in the long jump in 2016 at 24-8.75. Attuso will jump next spring for LSU.

Alex Bertrand had the state’s longest throw in the javelin with a toss of 192-10. Bertrand will compete for SLU next year down the road in Hammond. Junior Cole McKnight also picked up All-State honors in the javelin and his return should lessen the loss of Bertrand.

Kam Cummings hurdled his way onto the All-State team in the 100 meter hurdles. Cummings returns for another season and is the two time defending state indoor champ in the hurdles.

Distance runners David Toups and Jeffrey Kelley ran their way onto the All-State team. Toups, a Spring Hill cross country and track signee, made the squad as a 1600 meter runner. Kelley, a distance staple for four years, ran the 3200 meters for CHS and will continue running collegiately for St. Louis University.

Both the 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams were named All-State. The 4×200 team members were Jace Attuso, Sethan Hollier, Brendan LeDuff and Patrick Stephens. Hollier, LeDuff and Stephens were also members of the 4×400 relay team along with Trevor Thibodeaux. Like Attuso, LeDuff, Stephens and Thibodeaux are 2016 graduates.
