Varsity Lacrosse Bears Host Teams from Mississippi and Alabama

On Sunday, the varsity lacrosse team hosted teams from Mississippi and Alabama.  What started out as an over cast and cool day, soon warmed up with episodes of the sun being seen.

First up for the Bears, were the Greyhounds from Ocean Springs, MS.  The Bears came out ready to battle and were able to get on the board first, with a score by Christopher Miller at the 8:49 mark of the 1st qtr off of an assist by Evan Fontenot.  The Bears scored again at the 4:26 mark of the 1st qtr with a score by Daniel Grant.  The Bears held a 2-0 lead going into the 2nd qtr.  In the 2nd qtr, the Bears were able to score again, with a goal by Justin David, off of the the assist from Grant.  The Greyhounds were able to get on the board at the 1:25 mark of the 2nd qtr and a halftime score of the Bears leading 3-1. 

The Greyhounds were able to score twice in the 3rd qtr and tie the game.  The Bears scored at the 2:47 mark to hold a 4-3 lead going into the 4th qtr.  It was a 4 qtr the Bears would like to forget, as the wheels came off the track, as the Greyhounds scored 6 goals to the Bears 2, scores by C. Miller and David.  The final score had the Bears going down 9-6.

After the varsity game, the JVB took to the field to play the Dutchtown JV.  This turned into a exciting game, as the lead went back and forth between the two teams.  The Bears scored first, with a goal at the 9:34 mark of the 1st qtr by Grant Alonzo with an assist from Ray Odom.  Dutchtown was able to tie the score at the 6:03 mark and that is where the 1st qtr ended.  The Bears gave up 2 goals early in the 2nd qtr, but were able to get one back at the 5:08 mark with a goal by Shade Verret, off of an assist from Alonzo.  So the Bears went into halftime trailing 3-2.

They gave up another goal midway in the 3rd, but charge back late in the qtr with a goal at the 0:19 mark by Holden David, with an assist from Matthew Curtis and then at the 0:06 mark, Ashton Richard scored to tie the game.  With a tied score to start the 4th qtr, the went two men down at the 4:53 mark of the 4th qtr, yet the defense was able to kill the penalty without giving up a goal and at the end of regulation.  In OT, the teams traded shots, however Dutchtown was able to get a score with 0:48 left in the OT period to end the game.

Defensively, the Bears were led by goalie Ryan Smith, who had 11 saves on the day and Michael Browning, who had 3 ground balls and 2 take aways.

The final game of the day matched the varsity Bears against the Lower Alabama Bayhawks.  The Bears again came out slow, giving up 2 goals to the Bayhawks, before they could get on the board.  The Bears first goal came at the 2:13 mark of the 1st qtr, with a score by Evan Fontenot.  The Bears went into the 2nd qtr trailing 2-1 and quickly tied the score with a goal at the 10:44 mark by Andrew Young.  However, the Bayhawks scored a quick goal before Daniel Grant scored at the 8:59 mark to tie the score at 3 – 3.  Yet again, the Bayhawks scored 2 goals to take a 5-3 lead at the 7:33 mark of the 2nd qtr.  The Bayhawks scored yet again at the 3:00 mark of the 2 qtr to take a 6-3 into half time.

The first part of the 3rd qtr was pretty quite until the 4:04 mark when Justin David ripped a shot to bring the Bears within 1.  Soon there after, Fontenot scored off of an assist from David to tie the score at the 3:25 mark.  The Bears werení´t done for the qtr, as they scored again at the 2:03 mark with a goal from Jon Adam Town, who was assisted by David and then at the 1:30 mark, David scored with another assist from Grant.  Finally at the 0:42 mark, the Bears scored their last goal of the qtr, with a goal by David, his third of the game, giving him a hat trick.  The Bears went into the 4th qtr leading 8-6 and they were not done.  Just 25 seconds into the qtr, Young scored off of an assist from David.  David scored 30 seconds later with an assist from Miller.  At the 8:07 mark, Young scored his third goal of the game with an assist from Miller to give Young a hat trick and the Bears an 11-6 lead.  Young scored his 4th goal of the game at the 7:50 mark with another assist from Miller.  The Jayhawks broke their drought at the 6:41 mark, with a score, now trailing 12-7.  They scored again at the 5:47 mark.  However the Bears sealed the victory with Youngí´s 5th goal of the game off of yet another assist from Miller.  The Bayhawks scored their final goal as time ran out, giving the Bears a 13-9 victory.

Defensively, the Bears were led by goalie Beau Abadie who had 6 saves and Landon Tujague, who had 9 ground balls and 3 take aways.

The varsity returns to play at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, as the host the St. Martiní´s Saints at the Pete Boudreaux Track and Athletic Complex.  Come out and support the Bears!
